Overview

Nexium (esomeprazole) 20 mg is a medication used to treat frequent heartburn. It contains the active ingredient esomeprazole magnesium trihydrate, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). PPIs work by reducing acid in the stomach, which in turn reduces the production of stomach acid. It can be used to treat frequent heartburn in adults. Nexium is taken orally, usually at night, with or without food. Take one capsule once or twice a day.

Uses

Nexium is used to:

  • Treat heartburn (acid reflux).
  • Treat persistent heartburn.

How does it work?

Nexium (esomeprazole) works by blocking an enzyme known as the proton pump. This causes the stomach acid to be released into the blood. It prevents acid production in the stomach by blocking the movement of stomach acid into the duodenum. Nexium can be taken alone or with other proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Nexium can only be taken with food, as it can take up to 2 weeks for full effect. Take one 20 mg capsule once or twice a day once a day, as directed by your doctor.

What are the side effects?

Nexium can cause some side effects, although not everyone experiences them. These may include:

  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Upset stomach
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Bloating

Contact your doctor or seek immediate medical attention if these side effects continue or become bothersome.

Before taking Nexium

You should not take Nexium if you are allergic to esomeprazole or any of the ingredients listed in their Warnings and Precautions section.
